Bride Flower*
Written by Yungsiyebu B.Rinchen (1905-1977)
There are many kinds of Flowers
In the mountain steppes
Of our country that is beautiful and vast
But dearest of all to the hearts of our people
Is the Bride Flower
I heard an ancient legend
From the old people of the Orlut tribe
They say many years ago,
In the time of Chingis Khan,
When there were of wars of destruction.
In the time of warrior Chingis
The battle of began with the people of Sartagul*
So that all arguments might be decided with weapons.
In the north the drums began to thunder
Calling the tribes and the people
And in the South the drums began to thunder
Calling to battle the black clouds of war.
Covering the steppe with dappled tents,
The tribes brought glory to the Khan.
In the field of battle they searched for plunder.
There went the tribes of Kharachin, Khorchin and Orlut.
There went the tribes of Kereit, Jalair and Naiman.
Went by the kings imperious command
Under his terrible banner.
Untied by his iron will
The regiments advanced as one man.
Swearing loyalty to each other,
A pair of lovers parted at that time
Brothers were awaited from the march
Girls yearned for their loved ones
Long months they waited
One by one they counted the days
Those who had been left at home
Heard at last the news from far off lands.
A rumor was spreading in the steppes
They buried the King of Sartagul
And with him the cause of the quarrel.
They put to flight Sultan Jalal-ad-Din,
The famed wielder of the lance and sword
They had drunk their fill of human blood,
Those terrible power-loving Noyons and Khans
They turned their horses about
And quickly left the strange country
The invincible regiments of war
Overcoming hardship with courage and steel.
A girl bride was hurrying along the road
To meet her sweetheart.
The army stretched out into the distance
From sunrise to sunset
The passing of the army took up a whole day.
Countless regiments
Clad in iron from head to foot
Not even a needle could pierce between them.
Holding aloft the banner of war,
The bravest of the brave
Heroes mighty in battle
Famous regiments of archers,
Regiments with fury in their hearts,
The fearless Kheshigten*
Guards of the warrior Chinggis.
In that long line of soldiers
The girl anxiously searched for her darling
Until her eyes grew weary.
Proud of their glory and plunder
Clan after clan the regiments passed
But her darling was not there.
The girl-bride fell into despair.
Even among the prisoners of Bukhara and Tokharia
She looked for her beloved’s face.
In the throng of unhappy slaves
In pain under their jangling chains,
Marching in grief behind the army.
Thousands of people passed along the road,
Only one is missing and will never come
For whom she yearned for many long months
For long days she cried her heart out
The young girl bending her head in sorrow:
“You will never see
In this bright and sunny world
Such an unhappy person as I!
They will never see the sorrow of the parting
Of those with tender love in their hearts.
The evil word ‘war’ will never be forgotten
By all the peoples of the world.
Only happiness will exist in the world,
As if all people were one family.”
In this way the girl lamented
To the sky, to the earth and to the golden sun
Loving the world with her whole heart
Her tears fell like pearls
On that high roadside mound.
And they say that sweet smelling flowers grew there
And the old people named them- bride flower
In memory of her great and true love
We have a fine and ancient custom
Coming to us from time long passed
The tradition of giving this flower
To our friends when parting
And to those whom we love
So that the good words
Of that bride of times gone by
We need not see such sorrow of parting from those so dear to our hearts!
*The Bride Flower is also known as Scabious
*Sartagul-also known as Khwarezm middle Asia
*Kheshigten- guard of Chingis khan. Now a tribe in South Mongolia
